Blender: A Truly Professional 3D Software Package

I have been a professional 3D artist for nearly 7 years now. I have experience with many 'industry standard' packages like 3DS Max, Maya, AutoCAD and more. Just over a year ago I joined a small 3D visualization company, who used something called 'Blender' for modeling and animation.

Long story short I went from using software for which the licenses cost thousands of pounds, to a completely free open source package. I have not looked back or regretted that move, not even for a second. Blender is an amazing piece of software; It is Powerful, fast, intuitive, and comprehensive. Equally as important it has fantastic support, both from the developers and the community.

Regardless of whether you care for price, or whether you care for open source, I would recommend Blender without hesitation. Their amazing work deserves recognition.

My vote lies with OpenOffice. Many of the currently listed projects have had alot of exposure ( Ubuntu ) and have made great leadway against many similar commercial software. Open Office I believe could use a bump and to spread more word to see it used more often in business environments rather than just on our personal boxes.

A close second for me was VLC, but I feel it's gathered alot of strength over the years, and is already widely accepted as one of the best all around media players.

OpenBSD. Doing things securely, clean and proper above needless complexity and bloat.
Also for staying clean and open by remaining free of binary blobs, even at the expense of usability.

Battle for Wesnoth (www.wesnoth.org) free turn based strategy game. It would be a nice balance to all the gaming.reddit.com advertisements, and would appeal to more of the reddit community than just programmers.
