The reddit blog: reddit interviews Dirty Jobs' Mike Rowe

  • joebrandt · 3 months ago
    Hey Mike,

We really appreciate your show which celebrates the hard-dirty-guey work that some do for the rest of us.

Will you ever do a show which takes a look at the not-so-guey but still thankless tough jobs that others do?

    Hey Mike,

Discovery finally sold out, your show is now nothing more than an hour long commercial for Ford Motor Company. What do you say about that?
  • Roy · 3 months ago
Hmm...Product Placement + reduced commercials = win for all

Mike, when you visit each new job and meet new people, how do you figure out what kind of story you want to tell about those people? What must every episode communicate so that you are satisfied with your work?

    Are you a homosexual?

I imagine that you and your team have considered expanding the scope of Dirty Jobs internationally. You say that you are "laboring alongside men and women who do the kinds of jobs that make civilized life possible for the rest of us." Technically, and depending on your definition of "civilized," aren't many, if not the majority, of those jobs being performed abroad?

I think that an investigation of the global working community, the international laborers who make up the very foundation of modern society, would not only be fascinating to witness, but truly enlightening to your American viewers, myself included.

So my question is, are there any plans to extend the program internationally, searching out "dirty jobs" across the world? If not, why not?

Mike, thanks for showing me the daily workout you do to keep in shape on the road. I've been doing it daily and It keeps the flab at bay!

    (Tech support)

Oh and you should definitely try being a tech support rep for a show. It would be so hilarious.

Hey Mike, Wingman187 from reddit here. My question, in so many words is:

What you do, that is, work along side professionals in some of the dirtiest and least revered occupations, introduces you to many different kinds of people. As we have seen on the show, these people are regular nice hard working individuals. So why is it, in your opinion, that society has cast these hard working individuals aside as pariahs, instead of thanking them for the hard work they do that is necessary for civilized life? Also, is this why you decided to create the show, to in effect, humanize these hard workers and their dirty jobs to the rest of society?

In no specific order, what are (in your opinion) the top three jobs where the degree of filth AND disregard for safety were mere representations of individual lack of preparation and common sense (if sense were indeed...common)?

Of all the jobs you have worked on the show, what job had the best hourly pay and which one had the worst? This question is only relevant if you get that information from the people who you are working with on the show.

Hey Mike, love the show.. but don't you think you're kind of pushing the limits of the term 'dirty job' ?

  • Monte · 3 months ago
I've noticed that quite a few times your show should be retitled to "Messed up jobs!" or "Let's force some animals to procreate!" So, Mike, Do you ever feel that what you are doing is just wrong? Also, what job made you feel the most violated?

Hey Mike are you married ? Do you have any kids ?

I heard some stories through the grapevine about you being a prick to the guys who worked the hog farm in Iowa. You seem like a good guy who can relate with about anyone, and I really enjoy watching your show. As do many farmers and people I know who make a living off of work in the ag industry. So I was wondering if this was true or not.

Like I said earlier, I'm a big fan and I don't mean to create a stir or offend you, I'm just a bit curious.

P.S.-- The episode where you cleaned the rotten corn out of the grain elevator hit all the bases. That shit is putrid.

    Hi Mike,

I've noticed that organized labor is conspicuously absent from your program. Given all that unions have done to dignify work in this country, why are they not featured more prominently on your show?

    Best regards,

    YYYY
