Hi,
from my point of view, ads are an enrichment in general, when placed right and when they're contextual. Chances are, they will grab my attention when they're displaying content, which was the reason for me to visit that certain website in the first place.

Now, when I speak of contextual ads, I mean the ever loving Google AdSense ads or similar ones of course. From the view of a website owner those ads are an ideal way of saving time. They just save you from picking or buying images when writing articles or designing pages. You just place an image ad and you're good to go. It looks good, your visitors might get some use out of it and it makes you a little bit money.

Google for that matter lets you choose between text and/or image ads and those ads have the ability to match the page content. Having all this in mind, I cannot imagine that any person who visits a website (looking for information) gets disturbed or annoyed by ads, that are actually helping them to find a possible (or a better?) information or answer.
On the other hand...
when advertising companys are publishing ads with content that's really catchy and have that special "just want's ya to click on 'em" look. And when you're on that page and see nothing but more ads... Personally..., that's what I hate the most.

Google, for instance, has some strict rules in that case, when they let you publish ads with AdWords. If your ads do not meet their guidelines (irrelevant or misleading ads text) your ads actually have a good chance not to get displayed at all.

And that ain't only helping the readers but "them" advertisers too. The more interesting the website is (coming from a certain ad) the more stuff the user is willing to do there (signing up, buying products or becoming a member etc.)

At the end of the day, I think ads are a good thing... but only if they DON'T pop-up, swoop-in, pop-under, slide-in etc.

I have a very strict personal policy on those "r@t b@5t@rdos":
I DO kill every ad off, that I didn't ask for... no matter how intersting it may be!
But that's just me...

When your advertisers experience takes priority over what content will be available, your readers will disappear. And this will happen, it is simply a question of how soon.

Craigslist is losing visitors because they are making it so hard to post a friggin ad yourself, less post means less search content from titles of the ads.

Let's face it, it has nothing to do with advertising because some of the most populated blogs have ads on them, this is pure and simple B.S.

I would rather see a few ads on reddit than lose reddit because there are a bunch of cheap people who will support reddit in lipservice and not with their checkbook.

They do have expenses and need to generate revenue.

What do you people think reddit is? A God that does not need money to operate? How foolish.

If you have greasemonkey or stylish installed in firefox things like this should not bother you. These wonderful extensions make it trivial to customise a site or page to your liking, including removing sponsored links.

Remember it's your web.

I don't mind the ads as such, but at least on my monitor the blue background is so light that it's barely distinguishable from white. If you honestly don't want to trick people into clicking ads you'd make them stand out more.

I don't think that's a good place for ads, or at least not for ads *and* new links. Quickly learned "ad blindness" will make it a less effective way to feature new links. How about inserting ads a few spots down, like between links #5 & #6?
